Introduction
The Senior Meals Program provides nutritious meals to older Americans. These meals could be Hot lunches, Frozen lunches, or Breakfast meals in combination with lunch. All meals comply with the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans and have a minimum of 1/3 of the Dietary Reference Intakes for a senior adult as set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Breakfast is served only in combination with lunch. Together they meet 2/3 of the Dietary Reference Intakes. Occasionally, Hot meal clients receive a box lunch that meets calcium requirements through foods other than milk; however all of our other meals do contain milk.

Just as important as a well-balanced meal is the need for socialization and information, particularly to those elderly with unmet social needs. Serving meals in a congregate setting affords many opportunities for recreation, exercise, socialization, health screenings, and volunteerism. In addition, well-planned programs can provide information on topics of interest and concern to older adults, such as estate planning, medical and nursing home insurance policies, dietary concerns, and consumer fraud.
Senior Center Meals Back to Top
If an individual wants to receive a meal from the East Alabama Commission Area Agency On Aging, they must be 60 years of age or older or be the spouse of a client receiving these meals. All participants are encouraged to eat at their local East Alabama Commission Senior Center. If the client cannot do this, they may qualify for Home Delivered meals.

How To Join Back to Top
If you are interested in joining our program, please call the Senior Center in your county that is closest to you.
The Senior Center you call may not have a meal available, or there may not be a Senior Center in your area. If these problems arise, your best option for receiving meals at this time would be to enroll in our Sponsored Meals program.
Sponsored Meals Back to Top
Through the Sponsored Meals program, you could find someone to assist with the cost of your meals. We offer four different meal programs for you to choose from. You may not be able to receive hot meals or the cheaper frozen meal if you do not live within one of our Senior Center delivery routes.
